SIC (US 1987) : It seems that here in Brazil we are condemned to buy vehicles that pollute and kill. Vehicles that is slow as turtles, expensive as if made of gold and totally unsuitable for our characteristics. Although they are so masked by marketing that they even manage to be good products. The reason for this hell is simple: oligopoly. Large foreign factories do what they please. Without competition, we consumers are left with no alternatives. Now . how do we get to that point? And the central question is it possible to get out of this trap?
The history of all major vehicle factories is always the same. They all started small: which gave them agility to take advantage of unexplored niches. They all consolidated in an environment of strong competition with other small factories: which forced them to have competence and to promote innovation. All were in places that had consumers eager for their products: and so they were able to forgive the inevitable flaws that appear during the maturing of a certain technology. And they all had personnel with a lot of technical, administrative and marketing skills: what guaranteed their survival.
It follows that all large factories have a good cradle. The problem happens later, when some factories grow more than others (which is good because they are more competent), but they are so powerful that they do not allow small ones to appear (which is bad because the competition is over). The oligopoly then forms, with the giants investing all they can to convince their customers that their products are good and that the products of the new competitors are bad. With this mountain of money being invested in marketing, and very little in technological development, comes the stagnation with its known effects: expensive products, energy inefficiency, accidents, pollution and infernal slowness in traffic.
Therefore, to copy what has worked elsewhere and create a local industry, we need to cooperate with four conditions: existence of innovative companies, healthy competition, strong market and competent personnel. At least that is what happened to the vehicle factories of the USA, England, Italy, Germany, France, Singapore and China. But you see, when I use the word industry, I'm not talking about a single factory. An industry is a set of suppliers, factories and stores. Above all, in a sustainable national industry there is free movement of knowledge and personnel between the various companies, which further favors the development of the industry as a whole.
Brazil, for a change, is an exception. We do not have Brazilian vehicle factories that have any relevance. We do not have a national industry. That's because, when our market began to gain some strength, the big international factories came here, preventing the flourishing of small local factories. We live this condition until today, with the domination of the great factories of other countries that sell us terrible products. This is a completely inhospitable environment for small factory innovation. In this scenario of oligopoly, we are condemned to buy vehicles that are polluting, deadly, inefficient, expensive and unsuitable for our characteristics.
